15 Greatest Open Source Terminal Applications Of 2012

Check the link for some great Linux command line tools. I particularly like this one though.

dtrx is an acronmy for “Do The Right Extraction.” Its a tool for Unix-like systems that take all the hassle out of extracting archives. As a sysadmin, I download source code and tar balls. This tool saves lots of time. You only need to remember one simple command to extract tar, zip, cpio, deb, rpm, gem, 7z, cab, lzh, rar, gz, bz2, lzma, xz, and many kinds of exe files, including Microsoft Cabinet archives, InstallShield archives, and self-extracting zip files. If they have any extra compression, like tar.bz2 files, dtrx will take care of that for you, too.dtrx will make sure that archives are extracted into their own dedicated directories.dtrx makes sure you can read and write all the files you just extracted, while leaving the rest of the permissions intact.Recursive extraction: dtrx can find archives inside the archive and extract those too.Download dtrx

[APK] Seeder entropy generator to provide significant lag reduction – xda-developers

I found this on the XDA website. It works amazingly well for all rooted Android phones. It will speed up your phone and prevent lagging. Made my HTC Sensation feel a lot more responsive.

Hey everyone,

So, I was experiencing significant lag as we all do from time to time, and decided I was going to get to the bottom of it.

After tracing and debugging for hours, I discovered the source of 90% of Android’s lag. In a word, entropy (or lack thereof).

Google’s JVM, like Sun’s, reads from /dev/random. For all random data. Yes, the /dev/random that uses a very limited entropy pool.

Random data is used for all kinds of stuff.. UUID generation, session keys, SSL.. when we run out of entropy, the process blocks. That manifests itself as lag. The process cannot continue until the kernel generates more high quality random data.

So, I cross-compiled rngd, and used it to feed /dev/urandom into /dev/random at 1 second intervals.

Result? I have never used an Android device this fast.

Introducing MusicBrainz Picard

Category : Housekeeping, Music, Sound

It’s been a long time coming but I have eventually begun the gargantuan task of cleaning up my music library.

I’ve got hundreds of gigabytes of music and lots of it has come from the pre ID3 tag era. As a result I’ve got hundreds of files names Track 01 – Unknown Artist.

I started to Google about a way to rectify this sloppiness. Initially I thought I would have to run the files through a script to extract some information and then compare this to a music database. Luckily for me someone had already gone ahead and done all the hard work.

Introducing MusicBrainz Picard. This cross platform software can scan your music folders and compare the PUID or the Acoustic ID with a database of tracks to identify and tag those unidentifiable tracks.

A little blurb from the site

Picard supports the majority of audio file formats, is capable of using audio fingerprints (PUIDsAcoustIDs), performing CD lookups and disc ID submissions, and it has excellent Unicode support. Additionally, there are several plugins available that extend Picard’s features.

When tagging files, Picard uses an album-oriented approach. This approach allows it to utilize the MusicBrainz data as effectively as possible and correctly tag your music. For more information, see the illustrated quick start guide to tagging.

Definitely a must for anyone trying to get a handle on their digital music collection.

I often get asked about the best printers to buy. Generally my rule of thumb is that you should try to find the printer with the cheapest ink and not to worry spending more on the hardware. Well in the article below Melissa Riofrio of PC World keeps track of a number of different printers and their ink usage. Hopefully it will be of some use for those of you purchasing a printer.

Fixing the issue of the Asus Transformer TF101 not charging, SOLVED!

23

Category : Android, General

I purchased an ASUS Transformer TF101 a few months ago and I have been very happy with it. That was until recently. When I plugged it in it would no longer charge. I read on multiple forums that this was a common issue for Transformer owners and some fixes included putting the transformer plug into the freezer to cool it down and also to bend the pins slightly to try to make a connection. Neither of these worked for me so I decided to open the plug up to see what the problem was.

For those of you that have the TF101 you will know that the plug part of the charger comes in two parts. One part is where you plug the USB cable into and the other part is a plastic connection that corresponds with your country’s plug type.

Removing the casing

I removed the three pin plug from the “power brick” and then removed the small screw (you should use a T5 torx screwdriver but if you don’t have one of these you can also use a very small allen key) that held the plastic piece to the plug. Once I removed the screw I needed to prise the plastic panel from the plug by inserting a small flathead screwdriver into the slots where the metal prongs usually go and gently prise the panel off. This panel can be stubborn and some force is needed, I caused a small crack to this panel when removing it.

Once the panel was removed I was able to see two small springs. It seems as though these springs had recessed back into the plug preventing a connecting between the “power brick” and the plug. Using a screwdriver I pushed these springs downwards (towards the slit openings) and replaced the plastic panel. I plugged the Transformer in and BINGO we had power again.

Taking apart the plug will most probably invalidate your warranty but I was too impatient to wait to ship my charger off and get a replacement so I fixed it myself. Hopefully this will be useful to some others out there that have the same problem.

How to add an additional local disk to your XenServer 5.5 host « XenDesktopMaster

Category : LAN, Linux

On the XenServer CLI you have to list your physical disk with fdisk.

fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes

255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders

Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

/dev/sda1 * 1 499 4008186 83 Linux

/dev/sda2 500 998 4008217+ 83 Linux

/dev/sda3 999 30401 236179597+ 83 Linux

Disk /dev/sdb: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes

255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders

Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Disk /dev/sdb doesn’t contain a valid partition table

There you can see your new hard drive. In my case it shows up as /dev/sdb. For integrating the hard disk into your XenServer you first have to reveal the UUID of your host. This is done by the following command.

xe host-list

uuid ( RO) : ba3d140c-3de5-499b-b831-7c40d82958a9

name-label ( RW): xs-tarenz01

name-description ( RO): Default install of XenServer

The last step is to create a new XenServer storage repository. You have three options for doing so.

First option: create a normal LVHD storage repository. This is by the way the default storage repository type.

xe sr-create host-uuid=ba3d140c-3de5-499b-b831-7c40d82958a9 content-type=user type=lvm device-config:device=/dev/sdb shared=false name-label=”Local storage 2″
