It certainly has been a long time coming and even though it comes with strings, Sky’s “Sky Go” app has finally been released for Android. Don’t get too excited just yet though. Sky Go will only work on supported Android devices running 2.2x and 2.3x. Not only that but to “ensure that our rights contracts are fully upheld we are also unable to support any Android devices that have been rooted”. If you are running a non rooted 2.2x or 2.3x android device you are in luck but don’t celebrate just yet. Sky Go is only available on HTC Desire (HD), HTC Desire S, HTC Sensation, HTC Incredible, Galaxy S and Galaxy S II. So if you fit all the above criteria CONGRATULATIONS Sky Go is available to you.

Asus Transformer TF101 not charging, SOLVED!

Category : Android, General

I purchased an ASUS Transformer TF101 a few months ago and I have been very happy with it. That was until recently. When I plugged it in it would no longer charge. I read on multiple forums that this was a common issue for Transformer owners and some fixes included putting the transformer plug into the freezer to cool it down and also to bend the pins slightly to try to make a connection. Neither of these worked for me so I decided to open the plug up to see what the problem was.

For those of you that have the TF101 you will know that the plug part of the charger comes in two parts. One part is where you plug the USB cable into and the other part is a plastic connection that corresponds with your country’s plug type.

I removed the three pin plug from the “power brick” and then removed the small screw (you should use a T5 torx screwdriver but if you don’t have one of these you can also use a very small allen key) that held the plastic piece to the plug. Once I removed the screw I needed to prise the plastic panel from the plug by inserting a small flathead screwdriver into the slots where the metal prongs usually go and gently prise the panel off. This panel can be stubborn and some force is needed, I caused a small crack to this panel when removing it.

Once the panel was removed I was able to see two small springs. It seems as though these springs had recessed back into the plug preventing a connecting between the “power brick” and the plug. Using a screwdriver I pushed these springs downwards (towards the slit openings) and replaced the plastic panel. I plugged the Transformer in and BINGO we had power again.

Taking apart the plug will most probably invalidate your warranty but I was too impatient to wait to ship my charger off and get a replacement so I fixed it myself. Hopefully this will be useful to some others out there that have the same problem.

SSH Tunnel – keeping you safe online

I own a HTC Desire HD and I find it extremely handy when it comes to banking online or checking out my social networks.

With the emergence of software such as Firesheep and Faceniff I feel that mobile security is more paramount than ever.

This is where SSH Tunnel comes in. SSH Tunnel allows you to connect to a secure SSH (secure shell) server and pipe all your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel. Some of the main downfalls of SSH Tunnel are that you need a rooted Android phone, access to a SSH server and a little bit of technical knowledge.

If you are interested in more leave a comment and I can discuss it in more detail.

HTC Desire HD from Froyo to Gingerbread

Category : Android, DIY, General, HTC

I’ve been meaning to root and flash my HTC Desire HD for a while now and today I finally took the bull by the horns and attempted the procedure.

I’m not sure if it was just me or if the process was actually as difficult as I made it. After approximately 5 hours of tinkering I eventually rooted the phone and installed a custom ROM called Cyanogenmod 7.0.

First impressions are positive. The phone seems more responsive and I seem to be making less typing errors which makes me think that the keyboard functionality has been upgraded.

Here’s some images of my phone now. I must admit it was worth the effort in the end.

Android App of the minute (for me anyway)

Category : Android, Internet

SMS Backup+

I’m really getting into all this cloud stuff and I’m after finding it very handy to be able to back up all my contacts and images to the cloud. Until now I just figured that SMS messages would have to be backed up manually, maybe that was the case before but not with this app.

SMS Backup+ backs up all your SMS messages to your Gmail account. It creates a label called SMS and stores all your SMS messages under that label.

It can be configured to back up at regular intervals. It can be configured so that it will only backup when it has a WiFi connection.

It’s free from the Android Market

Android 2.2 Easter Eggs

Category : Android, HTC

I’ve been faffing about with my new phone for the last couple of weeks now and I’ve come across a few cool Easter Eggs on my phone. I’m not sure if these Easter Eggs will work only on the HTC or with all Android based phones all I know is that they are tried and working on my HTC Desire HD.
*Disclaimer – I am NOT responsible for any damage or loss of service signal or data from your phone if you use these commands*

Type the following into your phone to access each feature:
*#*#4636#*#* (or *#*#info#*#*)
Testing – gives access to five different information screens.
*#*#8255#*#*
GTalk service monitor – monitors Google Talk host address & port, your Google JID, your Device ID, GTalk connection status, your connection history, your current GTalk presence (available, idle or invisible), etc.
*#*#7262626#*#*
Fieldtest – pressing menu lets you do setup, or select item to test.

I’ve no real idea on the best or most informative ways to use these menus but I thought it was kinda cool to be able to get that information from your phone anyway!

Enter the HTC Desire HD

Category : Android, General, HTC

I’ve owned an iPhone 3Gs for the last 9 months or so and I recently saw a work colleague’s HTC Desire HD and immediately wanted one.

As great as the iPhone is I didn’t like the fact that I was locked into Apple and I could not install custom apps or get at the guts of the phone so I decided to try out Android.

I’ve been using the Desire for 5 days now and other than the usual hiccups like getting to learn the menus etc the Desire has been amazing.

I’ve found that there are apps out there that allow me to do whatever I want, one extremely impressive feature was that the default music player on my phone picked up my uPnP servers and automatically showed me their contents allowing me to stream music and movies to my phone across WiFi.

I’m hoping to install Apps and review them on this page so keep your eyes peeled for more.
